General information
Scars can disrupt your personal well-being, even if they are very small. The development of a scar depends on many different factors. These include its depth, the type of injury, the thickness of the skin, the location of the damaged area, the type of care taken directly afterwards. If the scar becomes unsightly a few months after an operation or injury, it can usually be treated with silicone patches, silicone gels, scar ointment, injections of corticosteroids and optionally a pressure bandage. If the scar is still unsightly 18 or 24 months after an accident or injury, it can be corrected surgically. Other scar treatment options are corrections by transferring your own fat or by medical microneedling.
Treatment procedure At the Bellefontaine Clinic
Before the procedure
The patient’s health issues are first clarified. It is discussed and drawn, which scar needs to be corrected. There are several methods to correct a scar. Together, we decide which procedure will give you the best possible “aesthetic” result. The decision to treat a scar conservatively or surgically depends on the age, type, colour, quality, area and elasticity of the scar and the skin surrounding the scar. In order not to endanger the wound healing process after surgical correction, we advice you not to smoke about 14 days before the operation.
During the procedure
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The scar is excised with as little tissue loss as possible. The subcutaneous tissue is specially prepared so that we can close the wound with as little tension as possible. At the end of the procedure, we apply special dressings to the wound so that the scar is as little stretched as possible.
After the procedure
After excision of the scar, the stitches must be removed within 7 days on the face and 14 to 21 days on the body. During this period, you should refrain from sports for at least 3 weeks. 3 weeks after the procedure, you can treat the scar with a special scar ointment, silicone patches and optionally compression bandages. You must do not expose yourself to the sun or you must use an ointment with a sun protection factor of 50 + as long as the scar is red.
Risks and side effects
Local swelling and bruising may occur during the first 2 weeks. Infections and hematomas are very rare. Sensory disturbances usually disappear a few weeks after the operation. A pathological scar, hypertrophic scar, keloid cannot be excluded.
