Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is caused by overdevelopment of the mammary glands in men, giving their breasts a feminine appearance. Gynecomastia in men is often not a good thing. There is also a second form of gynecomastia in which fat accumulates in the male chest called pseudo-gynecomastia. In the case of gynecomastia, the gland can be removed through a small incision in the nipple. In the case of pseudo-gynecomastia, the fat can be removed by liposuction.

General information
Gynecomastia is particularly embarrassing for the self-esteem of affected men. There are mainly two different forms of gynecomastia: classic gynecomastia and pseudo-gynecomastia, also called adipomastia. Gynecomastia is due to an excess of glands, while pseudo-gynecomastia is due to an excess of fat in the male chest. Gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia usually occur on both sides. Gynecomastia can occur during puberty. This is a real psychological burden for young men. It usually regresses on its own by the end of puberty and therefore does not need to be treated. If gynecomastia has been present for more than two years and has not reduced in size, a hormonal or drug cause should be sought. In this case, an ultrasound examination and a blood test should be performed. If the results are within norms, surgery is the only option to correct poirtin. In pseudogynecomastia, the enlargement of the breasts occurs due to the deposition of a layer of fat in the male breast. If neither exercise nor diet can correct pseudogynecomastia, liposuction of the breasts is indicated.
Treatment procedure
At the Bellefontaine Clinic
Before the procedure
In an initial consultation, we ensure that male breast correction is an operation that meets your expectations. For this purpose we clarify questions about your general health. We measure your body weight, height, the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer and the presence of superfluous glands in the breasts. An ultrasound scan and a blood test before surgery are standard. If you have too much fat in the breasts, the treatment is liposuction of the breasts. If you have too many glands in the breast area, we will remove the excess gland through a small incision in the nipple area. If the skin is very saggy, other procedures such as a breast lift are suggested. At the initial consultation, the areas to be treated will be outlined and you will have the opportunity to check the area to be treated in front of a mirror. It is strongly recommended that you stop smoking 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after surgery.
During the procedure
On the day of the gynecomastia treatment we take photos of the breast before the procedure in a standing position. Then we draw the future contour of the breast, also in a standing position. If you have opted for a general anaesthetic, an anaesthetist will explain the procedure to you before the operation. The procedure takes about 1 to 3 hours. In classic gynecomastia, the incision is made around the lower part of the areola. In pseudo-gynecomastia, small incisions of a few millimeters are made around the breast. At the end of the operation, a special breast bandage with a compression vest is applied. After only a few hours you can go home.
After the procedure
A compression girdle is applied immediately after the operation. It supports the adaptation processes of the skin and should be worn for at least four weeks. The pain after gynecomastia treatment is comparable to aches and pains. They can be easily treated with conventional painkillers, which you can continue to take at home for the first few days. You will also need to take antibiotics for 4 days after the procedure. Some patients return to work 2 days after surgery. As long as it is an office job, there are no medical reasons not to do so. The dressing is changed after one week. Light physical activities can be resumed after a few days. You can resume sports after 6 weeks. To make the scar as invisible as possible, scar treatment should be started after 3 weeks. Special scar ointments should be applied to the affected areas three times a day. Massage promotes the absorption of the cream. As long as the scar is red or pink, you should protect it from the sun.
Risks and side effects
Basically, every operation involves certain risks, such as infections or haematoma. After the operation, bruising, redness and slight swelling occur regularly. These disappear within two weeks after the operation. A loss of sensation in the nipple or in the skin of the breast usually disappears after a few months, but can also remain permanently.
