General information
The unique CoolSculpting technology is a non-surgical method, scientifically proven for many years, that can reduce stubborn fat deposits in problem areas such as the abdomen, love handles, hips, thighs, arms or double chin by 20-25%. The body of a healthy person has a fixed number of fat cells, regardless of weight gain or loss. These cells grow and/or shrink. Eliminating them is the most lasting and effective way to achieve a reduction in stubborn fat deposits. CoolSculpting © uses a method known as cryolipolysis. Adipose tissue is “sandwiched” between two cooling elements that chill the fat to 4 degrees Celsius, the freezing point of fat. Due to the intensive influence of the cold, the fat cells crystallize and are broken down and excreted by the body in a natural metabolic process via the liver for several weeks after treatment. The full results of fat reduction are then visible around 2-3 months after treatment. Scientifically proven results: A study published in 2009 entitled “Clinical efficacy of non-invasive cryolipolysis and its effect on peripheral nerves” proved that fat tissue treated with cryolipolysis could be reduced by up to 25%. This result was still visible 6 months after treatment. In some cases, there are contraindications to cryolipolysis. In addition to severe overweight, these include adipose tissue or skin diseases, cold or pressure urticaria, vascular inflammation and pregnancy. CoolSculpting is a safe and effective method for people with healthy/normal eating habits and an active lifestyle. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss treatment. CoolSculpting is intended for patients whose body weight is close to their ideal weight and who wish to reduce fat in one of the 9 FDA-approved treatment areas (abdomen, hips, flanks, thighs, chest, arms, chin, back, knees).

Treatment procedure
At the Bellefontaine Clinic
Before the procedure
During your consultation, we’ll examine whether CoolSculpting is the most appropriate treatment for your problem area. We’ll explain how the treatment is performed, what results can be expected and what risks may be associated with the treatment. In particular, we will look for contraindications such as cold-related illnesses (cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease), pregnancy, obesity. It is important, for example, to refrain from taking any medication with an anticoagulant effect for around 7 days prior to treatment.
During the procedure
First, we apply a gel pad to the area to be treated. This forms a protective zone between the cooling element of the CoolSculpting machine and the skin to prevent any cold burns. The applicator with the cooling element is then applied to the body, producing a gentle suction effect. The applicator generates a constant temperature of around 4°C, which propagates through the skin tissue to the excess adipose tissue. During treatment, sensations of tugging, light pinching, intense cold, tickling, stinging, slight pain and cramping may occur. These sensations disappear once the area has reached the desired cold temperature. The number of sessions recommended in each case depends on the extent of correction required and individual response to treatment. If a second session is recommended, we prefer to carry it out 4 to 8 weeks after the first treatment session.
After the procedure
After treatment, the applicator with the cooling element is detached and the treated area is briefly massaged to release the treated fat cells and promote fat reduction. As a general rule, our customers are able to resume their daily activities immediately after a treatment. We recommend resuming sport at least 24 hours after treatment. We also recommend protecting the treated area of the body from intense sun exposure. Fat reduction of around 25% is usually achieved in a single treatment. The full effect is visible after two to three months if weight has remained stable.
Risks and side effects
After the procedure, slight pressure pain, tenderness, bruising or reddening of the skin may occur, but these usually disappear within a few hours or days. Rare complications include paradoxical hyperplasia, subcutaneous induration and hyperpigmentation. Note that the amount of fat removed varies from person to person. Cryolipolysis treatment should be avoided in cases of medical conditions such as cryoglobulinemia or cold urticaria. It is also contraindicated in cases of pregnancy, abdominal wall weakness (hernia) or recent abdominal surgery.
The equipment
Unlike other cryolipolysis devices, CoolSculpting © is to date the only device to have received the requisite approval from the Swiss and European health authorities (CE certification), as well as from the American health authorities (FDA approval). Medical approval is extremely important, as the strict approval criteria offer a much higher level of safety. It’s all about safety, as well as the reliable achievement of good results that lead to high patient satisfaction. This requires efficient and consistent cooling performance from the unit. It must also enable efficient working. Simultaneous treatment of several areas saves time and is a great advantage for both patient and practitioner. In general, not just one zone is treated, but several.

FAQ
How much weight can I lose with Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting is used to specifically shape the silhouette. It does not reduce weight.
When will the results be visible?
Depending on the area, results will be visible after one to three months. This depends on the treatment area.
Can I support the process after treatment?
Yes, you can. It’s important not to gain weight during the three months when fat cells are broken down by the body. Sporting activity also has a beneficial effect on the overall result.
